Lesson 4 of 25
The Law of the Master Persona
Telling the model who to be changes what it notices. A venture capitalist and a logistics manager looking at the same business idea will raise entirely different objections, and asking for both gets you two sets of problems instead of one bland summary. The useful part of a persona is not the voice - it is the priorities and the blind spots that come with the job.
Persona work is the weakest fit for Perplexity of anything in this book. It will not hold a character, it will not role-play a conversation between experts, and the citations that make it valuable also make it a poor actor. What it can do is supply the ammunition each persona would need: the real market figures the VC would quote, the actual regulations the logistics lead would cite, the documented failure rates the coach would raise. Ask for the facts by expert angle, then run the critique in a tool that can hold a voice.
- Do not ask it to play a character; ask what experts would check.
- Request facts grouped by expert angle, then critique elsewhere.
- Use it for regulations - it will cite the actual rule.
- Ask for documented failures, not general risk advice.
- Keep one Space per decision you are researching.

What do you think of my business idea? (Context: My idea is a subscription box for rare indoor plants.)
Perplexity version
Do not role-play this - Perplexity will not hold three expert voices, and a cited summary is not a critique. Instead, get me the evidence each expert would bring, then run the actual critique in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini using these findings. The idea: a monthly subscription box delivering rare and exotic indoor plants to customers in Indian metros at around ₹1,200 a month. Research it along three lines and cite everything with dates. The investor's evidence: - What do current reports say about the Indian subscription-box market and the Indian houseplant and gardening market? Size, growth, who is cited. - Which Indian subscription-box businesses are operating now, at what price points, and which have shut down? What reasons were reported? - What published figures exist for subscription churn and customer acquisition cost in Indian D2C? Label clearly where only global figures exist. The operator's evidence: - What are the legal requirements for transporting and selling plants across Indian state borders - plant quarantine rules, phytosanitary certificates, any restricted or prohibited species? Name the governing authority and link the rule. - Which Indian courier and logistics providers accept live plants, and under what conditions? - What do sellers report about plant mortality and heat damage in Indian summer transit? Use Social focus for seller discussion and say where it came from. The marketer's evidence: - Which Indian plant and gardening brands are currently active, how do they position themselves, and what are they charging? Where you cannot find Indian data, say so rather than substituting a global number. Save to a Space called 'Plant box research'.

Explain what blockchain is.
Perplexity version
Skip the professor and the evangelist here - Perplexity will not sustain either voice. But it is well suited to the part of this chapter that matters most: checking whether the evangelist's claims are actually true. Research blockchain in two passes and cite everything with dates. Pass 1 - what it is. Point me to the clearest authoritative explanations of distributed ledgers, immutability and consensus mechanisms, from universities, standards bodies or technical primers rather than exchange blogs or marketing pages. For each, say what level of reader it is pitched at. Pass 2 - what it has actually done. This is the part I cannot get from an enthusiastic explanation. - Which blockchain deployments in finance and supply chain are actually in production today, and what is documented about their results? - Which high-profile blockchain projects have been shut down or quietly abandoned, and what reasons were given? Name them. - What do credible critics argue about where blockchain is the wrong tool and a conventional database would be better? Cite the arguments, not summaries of them. - What is the current status of blockchain and digital-asset regulation in India? Name the regulator and the rule, with dates. Finally: list the claims about blockchain that are widely repeated but not supported by the sources you found. That list is what I will use to pressure-test any explanation I am given. I will take this to another tool for the two-teacher explanation itself.

Should I quit my job to start a business?
Perplexity version
A coach persona will not work here - and for a decision this consequential you want sourced facts more than a sympathetic voice. Get the facts here, have the coaching conversation in a tool that can hold the persona and your private situation. Context for the research only: I am an accountant in India with ten years of experience, considering starting a catering business, with no professional food-industry experience. 1. What licences, registrations and approvals does a catering business in India actually need - FSSAI registration or licence and which category applies at what turnover, GST registration thresholds, local municipal and fire clearances, kitchen premises requirements? For each: the governing authority, the current cost, the typical timeline, and a link. Note where it varies by state, and cover Telangana specifically. 2. What do credible sources report about failure rates and failure causes for small food and catering businesses in India? Cite studies or industry reports, not blog posts, and give dates. 3. What is the realistic cost structure for a small catering operation starting out - commercial kitchen rent or cloud-kitchen hire, equipment, staff, food cost percentages? Cite Indian sources and state the period. 4. How do people typically enter catering in India - home-kitchen and cloud-kitchen routes, corporate or event contracts, aggregator platforms - and what does each require to start legally? 5. What is documented about the risks of the salaried-to-self-employed transition in India specifically: loss of employer health cover, income-proof problems for loans, how long people report taking to replace their salary? Cite it. Cite everything with dates. Mark anything unverifiable as unverified. Save to a Space called 'Catering decision'.
