Lesson 3 of 25

The Power of Organized Knowledge (Context)

A model knows a great deal about the world and nothing at all about your situation, so generic advice is the only honest thing it can give you until you supply the facts. Context is simply handing over what you know - the product, the people, the history, the constraint - as an organised block rather than expecting it to be guessed.

Reach for it whenWhen the answer you got was technically correct but useless, because it could have been written for anybody.

Split your context by how long it lasts. Facts that are true in every chat - your company, your city, your role, your usual audience - go into Custom Instructions and saved memory once, so you stop retyping them. Facts specific to this one task go in the prompt as a labelled block above the instruction. For a context set you will reuse across many tasks, a Custom GPT carries the background in its instructions and its uploaded files.

Worth knowingSaved memory means context can arrive that you did not type and may not want - a persona or an old project detail bleeding into new work. If an answer looks oddly shaped, check what it has remembered about you.
  • Durable facts in Custom Instructions, task facts in the prompt.
  • Label your context block so it is not read as instructions.
  • Build a Custom GPT when a context set gets reused.
  • Check saved memory if answers feel oddly pre-shaped.
  • Upload the source file rather than summarising it yourself.
Example 1: The Vacuum vs. The Informed Analysis

Instead of

Write a marketing email for my new product.

Perplexity version

Write the launch email for a new product.

**Context**
- Product: ZenFlow, a smart water bottle that tracks how much you drink and nudges you when you have not.
- Audience: health-conscious tech professionals, 25-40, Indian metros. They own a fitness band, they are sceptical of gadget clutter, and they have bought one health gadget before that is now in a drawer.
- Selling points: minimalist design; 30-day battery; syncs with Apple Health and Google Fit.
- Price and offer: 15% early-bird discount in week one.
- Goal: pre-orders on our website. One click, one destination.
- Constraint: we are a new brand with no reviews yet, so we cannot lean on social proof.

**Write**
1. Five subject lines, each using a different angle - problem, curiosity, offer, outcome, specificity. For each, one line on which audience instinct it plays to.
2. The email body, 150-200 words: hook on the real pain point (hours pass at a desk and you have had one coffee and no water), the three selling points as benefits rather than specs, one CTA.
3. The CTA button text, three options.
4. A plain-text version for recipients who block images.

Do not invent testimonials, ratings or user numbers - we have none. Address the drawer problem directly; that objection is the one that will stop the sale.

If I will be sending product-launch emails regularly, tell me what I should put into a Custom GPT's instructions so I do not have to paste this brand context every time.

Example 2: Generic Advice vs. A Tailored Solution

How should I handle a difficult conversation with an employee?

Perplexity version

Help me prepare for a difficult conversation with a team member. Act as an experienced HR manager who has run many of these.

**Context**
- Anjali, graphic designer, three years with us, genuinely talented. Quality is high whenever she delivers.
- Problem: for about two months she has consistently missed deadlines, which has knocked the whole team's workflow.
- History: two informal chats already. Nothing changed. She did not offer a reason either time.
- My aim: make clear this is now a serious performance issue, find out whether something is going on without prying into her private life, and put a formal Performance Improvement Plan in place. Supportive but firm. I do not want to lose her.
- Constraint: this is my first time running a formal PIP conversation.

**Produce**
1. An opening - the first 60 seconds, written out, that states the seriousness without making her defensive in the first sentence.
2. Three discussion points, each with the actual phrasing to use, and for each one a note on what I am listening for in her answer.
3. A short script for asking whether something outside work is affecting things - worded so she can decline to answer without it counting against her.
4. A closing that names the PIP, its duration, and what review looks like.
5. Three likely responses from her - defensive, upset, disclosing a real problem - and how to steer each one.

Then flag anything here where I should be talking to HR or a lawyer before the meeting rather than following a script.

Example 3: A Shot in the Dark vs. Data-Driven Content

Instead of

Write a social media post about our city.

Perplexity version

Write three posts for X (Twitter) for the official Hyderabad tourism account.

**Context**
- Just happened: the annual Hyderabad Food Festival closed with record attendance.
- Data we have: a recent visitor survey puts culinary tourism as the number one reason people come to Hyderabad.
- Audience: food lovers and travel creators across India.
- Goal: ride the festival's momentum into off-season bookings, not just get likes.
- Voice: official account, so proud and warm but never try-hard. No slang that will age badly.

**Write three posts, each doing a different job**
1. Momentum post: leads on the record attendance and converts it into a reason to visit now. Include an image suggestion that is specific - the dish, the setting, the time of day.
2. Engagement post: a genuine question people want to answer. Not 'who loves biryani?' - something that produces replies worth reposting.
3. Traffic post: drives to a blog post titled 'Hyderabad's Top 10 Culinary Hidden Gems', with a hook that makes clicking feel necessary.

Rules for all three: under 280 characters including the hashtags; include #Hyderabad #FoodCapital #IncredibleIndia; no invented attendance figures or survey percentages - I have given you no numbers to quote.

After the three, add one line each on the best posting time for this audience and what I should reply to the first ten comments to keep reach going.
